Why everybody in marketing or communication should know DAM

DAM artikel header1

I’m going to introduce you to something that may sound technical. Even a little boring, to be honest. But it’s something that’ll make your work days run smoother and more efficiently. It will save you valuable time. It’s called a DAM-system. A digital asset management system. Now let me tell you why you should invest in such a system.

It’s not because it’s the next ‘Big Thing’? That’s why you buy the new iPhone or the new Lumia from Nokia. The reason why you should get a DAM system is because it lets you work smarter. And even though the concept of ‘working smarter’ is trendy, there is also hard cash and quality behind the trend. In these times of financial disturbance, ‘working smarter’ IS actually smart!

You know these time consuming situations

You probably work in a busy organization that has a lot going on. You have to meet many needs, many demands and there are so many touch points you have to address. ‘Where is the PDF for the campaign we used last month?’ or: ’Hi Tom, do you know where I can find that great picture we used in our App? I can only find the small version for the App, but now I need a real high res version for a roll-up for the event… Oh I see, OK, I’ll talk to the offline marketing department to get it from them. Who has got the pictures stored over there? Ann? Great I will go looking for Ann. Thanks, Tom.’

Yes. You know these time consuming situations – and it’s time to work smarter.

There’s a great solution

A few years ago the first idea of a Single Source solution for Sitecore was fostered. By combining a Digital Asset Management System (DAM) and Sitecore CMS you get a very powerful enterprise system. A DAM system is a central archive where you can find and store any digital asset/ media files that your organization has. That includes the latest PDF and both high res and low res versions of that great picture you used in the App. You’ll have everything in every quality and format stored in a very user-friendly single system.

This is how you use it

A DAM works this way. Contributors will upload their final art (photo, brochure, white paper, video etc.) in the highest possible quality. The DAM system will then generate the required qualities and distribute them to the necessary locations automatically. Your web editors will get a web quality, your app developers will receive low-res images and the marketing department will use the out-of-the-box Media portal to browse the contents and download what they need for their next campaign. Everybody gets what they need from the same single source, the DAM system. The DAM system becomes the digital heart of your organization. And everybody will be saving time.

Once you have introduced a DAM system into your organization, you will never again have to ask who has a specific image or PDF. Instead you’ll look in the Media portal. You can even let external contributors or partners get access to the Media portal. You can easily restrict what they have access to.

That is working smart! And that is why you should get a DAM system!
